Saturday, 13 October 2018 | PNS | PATNA

The police are frantically looking for Kumari Manju Verma and her husband Chandeshwar Prasad Verma after the Patna High Court rejected the anticipatory bail plea of Bihar’s former Social Welfare Minister.

The couple are absconding after coming under the radar of the CBI. The Begusarai police withdrawn the police guard posted at her Shripur house under Cheria Bariarpur police station after he was grilled to inquire the whereabouts of Vermas.

The name of her husband came up during the investigation in the infamous Muzaffarpur girls’ shelter home case in which 34 minor girls were sexually assaulted. Verma was found to be in constant touch with main accused Brajesh Thakur and reportedly visited the shelter home secretly. After that his wife Manju was forced to resign as she was Minister of Social Welfare, the department under which the Government run shelter homes come and granted finance.

The CBI which was handed over the investigation by the Bihar Government raided their Shripur house on August 17 from where 50 live cartridges of various bores, including prohibited ones, were found. Since then the couple is on the run.

On Friday the Beguarai police pasted a poster on her house declaring her absconder and asking people to let police know their whereabouts if they have any knowledge.

Begusarai SP Avakash Kumar she is named accused in the recovery of cartridges and a case had been filed with the Cheria Bariar police station. He said raids were being conducted at different places to arrest the accused.

While a warrant of arrest against Chandeshwar Prasad Verma had been issued on September 25, Manju Verma had moved the high court to seek anticipatory bail. But her plea was rejected by a single bench on Tuesday. The Patna police also went in her search but she could not be contacted.
