India on Sunday successfully test-fired Agni-5 from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Abdul Kalam Island, formerly known as Wheeler Island, in Bhadrak district of Odisha. The ballistic missile was tested at around 9.50 am.
The indigenously-developed intercontinental surface-to-surface nuclear-capable weapon was fired with a strike range of 5,000 km to 8,000 km that can reach almost all parts of China.
The 17-metre-long and 2-metre-wide missile weighs around 50 tonnes and can carry a nuclear warhead of more than one tonne.
This was for the sixth time the missile was tested successfully. It was last tested on January 18 this year.
The first test of Agni-5 was conducted on April 19, 2012. later, the test was conducted on September 15, 2013, the third on January 31, 2015 and fourth on December 26, 2016 from the ITR.
The Agni-5 would be inducted into tri-service after a few more trials.
