World Cup can be anybody’s game

Friday, 15 March 2019 | Harshit Bisht | New Delhi

With the cricket's biggest showpiece event less than three months away, Indian skipper refused to term any side as favorites to lift the upcoming ICC World Cup in England starting from May 30.

After the shocking defeat by hands of defending World Champions at home in the last international assignment before the gala event, talismanic batsman who will lead India as the prime contender for the glory in England said that the tournament will be an evenly poised contest terming all the ten participating side as a threat and capable enough of lifting the trophy.

"Well, honestly every team in the World Cup is a threat. Anyone who gets on a roll in the tournament like this is difficult to stop that team and having said that a team having said that a team on a roll can be knocked out in the semis or even in the final they can be defeated immediately by a side that is more brave on that particular day. And who wants it more and is more expressive as a side."

"I don't think that any team in my eyes starts at the World Cup as favorites."

"You have to play good cricket to win a World Cup."

He also reflected upon the idea of making smart decisions on the field in order to make the most of any opportunity available saying a skipper is as good as his side is.

"You are as good as a side you are in, if you don't make good decisions there's no guarantee that the other team is just going to come and hand you victory on a plate. So any team is dangerous."

Citing the example of the West Indies, who could turn out to be a dark horse in the tournament after holding World Cup hosts England for series draw recently, he said that as the tournament is getting close, everything is getting exciting and the mindset will play a big part.

"You see how the West Indies have come along. They are going to be a serious threat in the World Cup as well because of the balance they have been able to crack. England has been a very strong side. Australia is now looking balanced. We are a strong side. New Zealand is good. Pakistan can defeat anyone on their day."

"It's very important to understand what mindset you are taking into the World Cup. And I am sure every team would want to take the best mindset they possibly can. And according to me, no one starts as favorites for World Cup," he said.
