Six percent forest area will have to be increased till year 2030 to balance eco-system at national level. It is necessary to plant saplings in their catchment areas to maintain cleanliness and keep the rivers flowing. Chief Policy Advisor of ICIMOD Kathmandu (Nepal) BMS Rathore said this while expressing his views on the topic ‘Forestry for Well-being of People and Eco Systems’ in the lecture series ‘Transformative Change - Sustainable Outcome’ organised at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Good Governance and Policy Analysis.
Director General of the Institute, R Pashuram said that we have to think about the future along with the present. He said that the principle of “Solace by refusal' could not work. Parshuram said that climate change and global warming are important topics at present. Excess carbon emissions are creating new problems. He said that we all need to work together for environmental conservation. If we start working today, its results will be seen in the coming days.
Rathore said that there is need to launch the “river calling” campaign in the country. This campaign can be successful if it is made a public movement. He said that good work has been done in the field of affroestation in Madhya Pradesh. The state has attained the status of Tiger State again. Rathore also told about the regeneration of Karoboh forest in Chhindwara district. He said that farmers are themselves coming forward in bamboo production.
Rathore said that the skills of the people living in and around the forest areas should be upgraded and provided employment opportunities. This will reduce their dependence on forests. Forest committees will have to cooperate for micro planning. Rathore also discussed the main points of good living. He told that in Delhi's government schools, there is one period for the subject of Happiness.
