29 FIRs for poll code violation in 10 days

A total number of 29 First Information Reports have been registered in just 10 days since the ‘Modal Code of Conduct’ for the General Elections 2019 came into force. Among the total FIRs against various political parties in Delhi, three cases each lodged against Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP), for violating the model code of conduct.

Special CEO Satnam Singh said that the poll body has also removed more than 1.8 lakh hoardings, banners and posters since the enforcement of model code of conduct.

“Out of the three FIRs lodged against the AAP, one is related to using auto rickshaw for election campaign. In most of the 29 cases, FIRs were registered against political parties for defacing public property,” said Ranbir Singh, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Delhi.

Singh said 91 FIRs have been registered and 112 people arrested under the Arms Act since March 12 while police have seized 99 unlicensed weapons from them. As many as 296 FIRs have been registered and 302 violators arrested under the Excise Act, he added.

As per the data shared by the Delhi CEO, a total of 187573 posters and banners promoting the leaders of various political parties have been removed from 11th to 20th March.

Among the total number of banners and posters removed in the national Capital, 30533 were removed from New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), 41007 were removed from the East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) and 48553 by South MCD and 65069 by the North MCD. The remaining, 2411 were removed by the Delhi Cantonment Board.

On the directions of the Delhi CEO, the Delhi Police have seized a total number of 90 unlicensed arms and 2,131 cartridges, explosive and bombs have been seized. As per the data shared by the Election Commission, a total number of 3294 licensed arms have been deposited and 16560 persons have been booked under various sections CRPC/Delhi Police act as preventive action measures. Around 235 FIRs registered and 253 persons have been arrested under the exercise Act.

A total of 296 FIRs and 302 persons have been arrested under Exercise Act for violating the model code of conduct. “Till date, two litre, 370 bottles, eight half, 36189 quarters of Indian Made Foreign Liqour (IMFL) and 223 bottles, 80275 quarters country made liquor and 412 bottles have been seized,” shows the report shared by CEO.

Further, 91 FIRs have been registered under Arms Act, in which 112 persons are arrested and 94.337 kg narcotics or drugs have been seized. “As, on date, we have registered seven cases for having connection with the misuse of car under various categories such as election purposes, gratification or voters among others,” said the report.

As per the report, in the last two months around two lakh people have been added to the electoral roll in Delhi, taking the total number of eligible voters to 1.39 crore at present which includes 77,05537 male, 62,82366 female and 665 third gender voters.

The reports also shows that there are around 1, 81,756 voters between the age-group of 18-19. As per the CEO, there has been an increase of 90,000 to one lakh voters after model code of conduct came into force.

The Lok Sabha Elections will start from April 11 and will be held over seven phases, followed by counting of votes on May 23.  The election in Delhi is scheduled on May 12.

Polling stations will be set up in total 2,696 locations with 13816 polling booths in each Assembly constituency. Delhi has seven Lok Sabha seats and 70 Assembly constituencies. There would 425 critical polling stations, as per current assessment, officials said.
