Arti Mehra meets Tihar inmates under Bharat Ke Man Ki Baat drive

Tuesday, 12 March 2019 | Sapna Singh | NEW DELHI

As a part of political campaign titled — Bharat Ke Man Ki Baat, BJP leader and former Mayor of MCD Arti Mehra met Tihar inmates and learnt that the inmates want speedy trail and an opportunity to reform themselves.

To seek suggestion for the formation of Sankalp Patra ahead of upcoming general election scheduled on May 12 in Delhi, Delhi BJP leaders met with the inmates.  Addressing the conference, BJP leaders along with Mehra said that the team visited Jail No. 2 and 4 on March 1 and met convicts and under trials.  Notably, the inmates do not have rights to vote although they offered suggestions on various issues pertaining to law and living conditions of the inmates in jails.

“Initially, I had gone thinking that they demand better living conditions in jails but they spoke about issues like getting a speedy trial and speedy justice. Many of the first-time offenders accepted that they had committed a crime but after serving time in jails, they realised the value of relationships and wanted to get back to lead a normal life,” Mehra said, adding, “Several first-time offenders said there should be a mechanism so that they can be accepted in the society.” She said she met 170 convicts and around 600 under-trials. Some of them said Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) - Punishment for rape, is being misused.

“Some of the inmates came with facts and also spoke about the power and money game and said it should be ended. They also said in some cases, the sections of rape were being misused,” Mehra said.
