Bizman jailed for 2 yrs, fined Rs 1.15 crore for stealing power

In two separate cases, the Special Courts of electricity on Wednesday convicted three city businessmen for stealing electricity. While a businessman from East Delhi has been awarded 2-year imprisonment and a penalty of around Rs 1.15 crore, the two Khanpur businessmen were given one-year jail and a penalty of around Rs 10 lakh.

According to BSES spokesperson Rajpal Singh, the businessman from east Delhi who is a resident of Old Seelampur, was found to  stealing 45 KW of electricity for running sewing machine and lathe machine at his premises in 2013.

"A power theft bill of Rs 48 lakh was raised against him which he did not pay following which an FIR was registered against him," informed the BSES spokesman.

The Court while convicting him said, "The accused is held guilty and convicted for the offence punishable under section 135 of the Electricity Act and is also held liable for the civil liabilities for using electricity illegally for commercial purpose under section 154(5) of the Electricity Act."

The accused was found to be directly involved in power theft by the special electricity court that sentenced him with a penalty of Rs 1.15 crore besides simple imprisonment of two years.

While in the power theft case of Khanpur, a power theft bill of Rs 10.64 lakh was raised against the businessmen duo Kartar Singh and Bhanu, which was not paid resulting in registration of an FIR against them.

The court convicted the businessmen in the case, directing them to pay a fine of Rs 5, 73,243 (Rs 2, 86,622 each). They were also directed to pay (Rs 3, 82,162 (Rs 1,91,081 each) towards their civil liability.

The discom officials detected power theft in a garments workshop at Khanpur Extension in 2016.

An inspection in 2016 found two South Delhi Businessmen, stealing over 16 KW of electricity for running a sewing and garments workshop at D 23-3C Khanpur Extension. According to the guidelines, a power theft bill of Rs 10.64 lakh was raised on the duo. 

When they did not pay the fine, a complaint was filed at the Neb Sarai Police Station.
