Booklet for deaf unveiled at NGO consortium meet

An information booklet 'Aama Jojana Aama Adhikar' for deaf people was launched by Mission Deaf Inclusion (MDI), Odisha, a consortium of four non-Government organizations of the State working for the wellbeing and empowerment of deaf children and young persons in rural communities, supported by Deaf Child Worldwide, UK.

The voluntary organizations are SNDAYP, Puri; LIPICA, Ganjam, CARD, Ganjam and SADHANA, Mayurbhanj. The launching ceremony was organized in NCSCDA-National Career Service Centre for Differently-Abled, here.

Assistant Director, NCSCDA, RK Sharma presided over the meeting.

The chief guest of the programme was State Commissioner for Persons with Disability Sulochana Das and the guests were District Social Security Officer Sannyas Behera, representative of SSEPD Government of Odisha Bijaya Parida, Chief Executive, Odisha Association of the Deaf PR Das, advisor to the State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities Lanu Wanboy Aimol, among others.

Convener of Mission Deaf Inclusion (MDI), Odisha,  Ranjit Mahapatra delivered the welcome address.Advisor, MDI, Odisha Pravakar Sahoo shared the experience of working with deaf people in rural community and set the ground by sharing the purpose of the august gathering.

The guests on the dais unveiled the booklet for the public. The copies of the booklet were distributed among the audience for larger circulation, use and experience.

Bijaya Parida, Chief Executive, Odisha Association of the Deaf, being a deaf person himself shared about the difficulties of deaf persons when visiting to different offices. He shared his own experience of being remaining isolated of information.

Sannyash Behera said that the information presented in the booklet contains pictures and sign language pictures that help deaf people to understand easily.

PR Das, shared his long experience of working in the field of disability and said that deafness is an invisible disability. Lanu Wanboy Aimol emphasized the need of sign language and interpretation of deaf people.

Chief guest Sulochana Das said that the booklet provides information in a very comprehensive manner in pictures, in sign language and in Odia.
