Monday, 18 February 2019 | Staff Reporter | NARAYANPUR

A District Reserve Guard (DRG) jawan was injured following an encounter with security forces and Maoists in a forested patch of insurgency-hit Narayanpur district, police said here on Sunday.

The faceoff between insurgents and police force took place at  around 10 am in the forest of Ikmetta village in Abhujmad area when a joint team of Special Task Force (STF) and DRG was out on an anti-Naxal operation, Deputy Inspector General (anti-naxal operation) Sundarraj P said.

Police had received specific intelligence input that around 200 Naxals were present in forests of Ikmetta, Irpanar and Irakbhatti villages. Acting on the input security forces had launched the operation, he said.

When the patrolling team was advancing through Ikmetta, located around 350 km away from the capital Raipur, it came under heavy fire from a big group of armed naxals that led to encounter, he informed.

After a prolonged exchange of fire, naxals fled into a nearby dense forest.

“A DRG jawan identified as Dayaram Nureti sustained minor injuries in the incident,” the DIG said. Nureti was rushed to a local hospital where his condition was said to be out of danger, he added.

As per ground report and blood stains found at the encounter spot, at least 10-15 naxals are believed to have sustained bullet injuries but their colleagues managed to drag them inside the forest, police claimed.
