Public hearing on Okhla waste plant expansion postponed

Thursday, 17 January 2019 | SR | New Delhi

A public hearing on the expansion of Waste To Energy Plant at Okhla STP from its present 16MW capacity to 40MW called at the compound of Deputy Director Education, in South Delhi’s Lajpat Nagar, where the ADM of Southeast District of Delhi, was expected to interact with Okhla residents was posponed, according to activists who went there on Wednesday morning.

The RWAs, civil society organisations and activists of Okhla, who turned up at the spot, said earlier they had termed the public hearing illegal and had pleaded the authority that it should have been held at the plant site or in its vicinity as required by EIA Rules 2006 and not 5-15 km from the affected colonies. For years, Okhla residents have been peacefully protesting for the closure of the plant, claiming that its operation in a residential area is illegal and health hazard.
