Police on Monday arrested a 36-year-old woman and her paramour on the charge of murdering the former’s husband on Saturday night.

The arrestees were identified as Laxmi Barik, a resident of village Kiakhali under the Rasgobindapur police station of Mayurbhanj district, and Sapan Das of village Julubalanda under the Basta police station of Baleswar district.

The duo, after committing the crime on Saturday night, had buried the body in village Ambatota under the Raibania police station of Baleswar district.

The incident came to the fore after the locals of Raibania suspecting something fishy informed the police.

The body was exhumed in the presence of Baleswar and Mayurbhanj police and a magistrate with the help of sniffer dog.

The accused confessed to the crime in the police custody.

Sources said the victim Sankarshan Barik (42) had married Laxmi of Bazarseni under the Jaleswar police station about 15 years ago and the couple has a 14-year-old daughter and a 12-year-old son.

Sankarshan used to be out of the State for his job. Laxmi developed intimacy with the accused Sapan and later their relationship turned physical.

But after Sankarshan came to know about it, he warned Laxmi about the illicit relationship. But instead of refraining from the relationship, she along with Sapan decided to eliminate Sankarshan.

On Saturday night, while Sankasrshan fell asleep, the accused duo strangulated him to death and took the body in a scooty and buried it in Raibania.  .

Betnati SDPO Gobinda Chandra Sethi said, “The victim Sankarshan was killed by the accused duo Sapan and Laxmi by suffocating him with a pillow.

They have been booked under Sections 302, 201 and 34 of IPC and forwarded  to court.”
