The Chhattisgarh Assembly on Tuesday on Tuesday paid rich tributes to former President Pranab Mukherjee and eight former MLAs at the start of a two-day special session after which the house was adjourned for 10 minutes.

Before making the obituary references, the Speaker announced that like in the Lok Sabha, in the context to Covid-19, the members could speak while being seated.

Speaker Dr Charan Das Mahant read out the obituary references to Mukherjee, former state Ministers Chaneshram Rathia and Madhav Singh Dhruve, former MLAs of undivided Madhya Pradesh Luis Beck, Dr Chandrahas Sahu, Dr Rajeshwari Prasad Tripathi, Shashi Prabha Devi and Devi Prasad Arya, and Mahendra Bahadur Singh, the first Pro-Term Speaker of the state.

Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel in his address said during this period, many politicians have been lost with whom he had both personal and working relationship.

He said it was Pranab Mukherjee who ordered to stop using ‘His Excellency’ for the President of India.

Recalling the contributions of former MLAs from Chhattisgarh, Baghel said they were mass leaders who knew the pulse of the people.

Leader of Opposition Dharamlal Kaushik, former Chief Minister Dr Raman Singh, Ajay Chandrakar, Mohan Markam, Amarjeet Baghat and others paid rich tributes to the departed souls.

The Assembly observed a 2-minute silence following which the Speaker adjourned the House for 10 minutes.
