A Government teacher on Covid-19 duty was allegedly assaulted by a police constable late on Wednesday night in Haridwar. It is alleged that the constable was drunk and did not listen to the teacher.
Teachers have also been deployed for tasks as part of efforts to tackle the situation resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic. Some teachers have been deputed to Haridwar railway station. On Wednesday night a train with about 1,200 migrants from Mumbai was to reach Haridwar railway station and for this a teacher of government primary school was going to discharge his duty at the railway station. It is alleged that on the way a constable stationed at Chandighat post stopped him and even after being explained about the task, slapped the teacher. He went on to further beat up the teacher.
Bleeding from the nose and mouth, the teacher reached Haridwar station and informed the senior officials about the matter. The teachers on Covid-19 duty were angered by the incident and said they would discharge their duty only after action was taken against the constable.
After assurance of the deputy collector and SP City on the spot to take action in the case, the teachers resumed their work while warning that they will discontinue their task if no action is taken against the guilty policeman.
Superintendent of Police (City) Kamlesh Upadhyay said that investigation is underway and action will be taken based on facts revealed in the investigation.
