UP tops in giving jobs under MGNREGS

The Uttar Pradesh government bagged the top slot in distributing wages to labourers under MGNREGA and providing jobs under the employment guarantee scheme.

Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Awanish Awasthi said on Wednesday that as per Central government report, UP’s share in giving jobs to labourers in MGNREGA schemes was 21 per cent of the entire country, as it provided employment to over 46.27 lakh people by creating 13.06 lakh man days.

Awasthi said that UP paid the maximum wages of Rs 2594.82 crore to MGNREGA workers out of which Rs 71.32 crore was paid on Tuesday.

He said Rajasthan came second to UP by distributing MGNREGA wages amounting to Rs 2064 crore.

The ACS said that employment growth in the state was 12 per cent while 74.69 lakh people were working across the state .

Government records maintain that UP has about 1.80 crore MGNREGA job card holders and of them, 85 lakh are active.

Besides, construction work in gram sabha, restoration of rivers, construction of rural roads, digging of ponds and pits for plantation drives and other works are being carried out under rural job scheme to provide work.

In the last financial year, the highest single-day engagement of labourers stood at 14 lakh and around the same time last year, an average of about nine lakh workers were engaged under Mahatma Gandhi Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS).
