The Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited has imposed a ban on installation of new China-made meters by the power distribution companies.
Energy Minister Shrikant Sharma had last week ordered a probe into the supply of meters by an Indonesia-based Chinese company.
The UPPCL has taken the decision to ban the China-made meters following growing clamour for ban on Chinese products after the stand-off between the Indian Army and People’s Liberation Army of China in which 20 Indian Army personnel were killed in a clash in Ladakh’s Galwan Valley.
“Installation of Chinese meter has been banned in the state. Details have been sought about orders of Chinese meters and equipment and also contracts of Chinese items awarded in the past one year,” said an official of the UPPCL here on Tuesday.
All India Power Engineers Federation president Shailendra Dubey welcomed the decision.
“In thermal power plants, boilers and turbines and generators and all other equipment are imported from China as they are cheap. It is a truth that the quality of Chinese equipment is not good,” he said.
Dubey said their association demands that equipment used in power plants be purchased from public sector company Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) as it would also help in achieving the objective of Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India).
