The Uttar Pradesh government on Monday announced the schedule of the block pramukh and district panchayat chairman elections which will be held from June 15 to July 3. The announcement was made by the Panchayati Raj department in consultation with the Uttar Pradesh State Election Commission (SEC).
The elected members of Kshetra Panchayat or Block Development Council (BDC) will elect the block pramukhs while elected members of district panchayats will elect the chairman of District Panchayat or District Development Council (DDC). The elections will be held to the post of 75 district panchayat chairmen and 821 block pramukhs.
The three-tier panchayat elections were held in four phases and concluded on April 29 last. The counting of votes was held on May 2. The elections were held for 58,176 posts of village pradhan, 7.32 lakh posts of members of village panchayats, 75,852 members of kshetra panchayats and 3,050 members of district panchayats.
Principal opposition party in Uttar Pradesh, Samajwadi Party emerged as the frontrunner as at least 742 candidates for district panchayat members backed by it won the DDC member seats, compared to around 679 for the ruling BJP. However, the independents ruled the roost as they won around 1,000 DDC seats.
Around 320 candidates backed by the Bahujan Samaj Party won the DDC seats. The Congress, which has been striving to regain ground in the state, maintained that 270 contestants supported by it emerged victorious.
