Police join hands to bridge digital divide

Wednesday, 04 August 2021 | PNS | Jamshedpur

In a noble gesture, Jamshedpur Police handed over gadgets and mobile phones among needy students to help them attend online classes. In a ceremony organised at Bistupur Police Station seminar hall, a total of 64 mobiles, two tabs and two laptops donated by citizens in ‘Mobile Bank’ were distributed among needy and meritorious students. So far, about 300 mobiles have been distributed among students in East Singhbhum district.

SSP M Tamil Vanan said that the initiative started by Jharkhand Police has received an overwhelming response in East Singhbhum. People from various walks of life have lent their support and contribution has increased. All the police stations have received donations and now these are being distributed further.  He said that the police have built a bank of used mobiles and laptops for distribution among poor students so that they can continue their studies during the pandemic lockdown. The idea behind the move is to bridge the digital divide between students of different financial backgrounds.

The senior cop said that people who can afford to buy all the latest gadgets often have two to three spare smartphones. The police had appealed to those having extra smartphones or laptops and are not using them to donate at local police stations.
