A day after Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) swapped two seats, the Akali Dal on Wednesday announced RD Sharma as its candidate from Ludhiana (North) constituency for the ensuing 2022 Punjab assembly elections. With the announcement, the SAD has announced a total of 84 candidates, out of total 97 seats in its share.
Its ally, BSP, is contesting 20 seats. Notably, SAD severed its two-decade-old alliance with the BJP over the issue of central farm laws, and entered into a pre-poll arrangement with the Bahujan Samaj Party.
Sharma, a three-time councillor from Ludhiana has also remained the deputy mayor of the city's municipal corporation. At present, his mother is the councillor from the ward that Sharma represented. He joined the SAD after quitting the BJP along with former minister Anil Joshi in August.
SAD, only a day before, had swapped the Ludhiana (North) seat with alliance partner BSP along with Mohali, and in its place, it has given Raikot and Dinanagar to its ally.
