Police arrested two persons on Friday for allegedly posing as Maoists and extorting money from contractors, Government servants and businessmen for the last three years in Kalahandi district.
The arrested duo was identified as Udhaba Naik of Jalkrida village under the Bijepur police station and Jarasandh Sindura of Madiguda village under the Kegaon PS.
Police seized cash of Rs 1 lakh, three mobile phones and a bike from them.
The duo’s activities came to the fore while the police were investigating the complaint of one Humraj Naik of Ghantiguda village. Humraj had lodged a complaint at the Thuamul Rampur police station on June 10 that he had received threat calls that if he fails to pay Rs 2 lakh, he and his family would be murdered.
The caller identified himself as a Maoist and called him twice.
Subsequently, police recorded the calls and formed a special team to nab the accused. While Udhab was receiving Rs 1 lakh from Humraj, police caught him red-handed. After an inquiry it was revealed that Udhab's associate Jarasandha was providing phone numbers and information of victims’ financial status. Both were arrested and forwarded to court.
Kalahandi SP Abilash G said six cases were pending against the accused duo in different police station areas for the last three years in which they had collected money from the victims impersonating the Red rebels.
