Three persons of polling team injured in mishap

Sunday, 03 July 2022 | Staff Reporter | Bhopal

Three persons, including a member of a polling party returning from a polling booth after second phase of voting in panchayat elections, were injured on late Friday night when a group of people pelted stones in Dhar district of Madhya Pradesh.

SDOP Dilip Singh Bidwal said stones were pelted at the vehicle carrying the polling team in newly constituted Garwal gram panchayat of Gandhwani Janpad.

After the second phase of voting, the polling officials carried out counting of votes, prompting supporters of one Bhangadi Bai to burst crackers assuming she had taken the lead.

“Supporters of one of the woman candidates (later identified as Resham Bai) in the fray started pelting stones after she was found trailing during the counting,” he said.

A bus, which was ferrying the polling party back to the district headquarter, was hit by stones. A police vehicle was also damaged.

“Windshields of the vehicles broke in the stone pelting” the SDOP said, adding that three persons including a member of the polling party sustained minor injuries in the incident.

Dhar police has registered a case against Resham Bai, Badaam Singh, Jitendra, Mahendra, Fitesh, Urmila and around 50 unknown persons while further investigation was under way, Bidwal said.
