A mentally-challenged man from Uttar Pradesh was assaulted by a few locals in Peteipur village, six km from here on Thursday. Police rescued the victim from the spot on a tip-off.
The victim revealed his name as Rajkumar hailing from Adimpur village under Gonda district in Uttar Pradesh. He has been missing from the village for past four months.
The civil administration and police of Gonda district were contacted and the victim's brother identified him through video conferencing and assured police of visiting Jagatsinghpur shortly to take back his brother, informed Jagatsinghpur police station SI Pratap Kumar Dash.
Sources said the victim was seen in Petipur village for last three days wandering in streets. Suspecting him to be a thief or child stealer, the locals had assaulted him when he could not reveal his identity.
