Hindu nationalist leader Veer Savarkar once again became a bone of contention between the Opposition Congress and ruling BJP on Monday, as the Maharashtra Congress hit out at the J P Nadda-led party  for “removing” the statues of Rajmata Ahilyabai Holkar and Krantijyoti Savitribai Phule while celebrating Savarkar Jayanti at Maharashtra Sadan in New Delhi.

Describing as “outrageous” the manner in which the statues of Savitribai and Ahilya Devi were removed from Maharashtra Sadan on the Savarkar Jayanti at Maharashtra Sadan in New Delhi on Sunday, Maharashtra Congress president Nana Patole demanded a public apology from both chief minister Eknath Shinde and deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis of the BJP for “insulting” Maharashtra’s two iconic  leaders “who are a source of inspiration to the society”.

Talking to the media persons, Patole charged that that the BJP “does not respect women and such things happen only because of their anti-women mentality”

“The BJP can do anything on the basis of its numbers, the same thing happened in Maharashtra Sadan. The BJP is trying to create a new history on the strength of numbers. What happened in Maharashtra Sadan is causing a lot of backlash and strict action should be taken against the culprits in this case,” he said.

“The world remembers Mahatma Gandhi and Buddha and BJP forgets these great men as soon as they come to power,” Patole said.
