Rahul leaves Wayanad LS seat for Priyanka
Ending weeks of suspense, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Monday finally decided to retain the party bastion Raebareli Lok Sabha seat and vacate Wayanad in Kerala from where his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will contest. As per the rules, Rahul who won both Wayanad and Raebareli seats, has to decide within 14 days of the results which seat he would retain which came out on June 4.
After a high-level party meeting on Monday, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge announced that Rahul would be representing the Rae Bareli seat while Priyanka Gandhi will fight in the bypolls for the Wayanad seat. Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and party general secretaries K C Venugopal and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra were among those present during the discussions.
Rahul said both Rae Bareli and Wayanad “will get two MPs”. “I have an old relation with Rae Bareli and I am very happy that I will be representing it. This was not an easy decision, because affection is with both (Wayanad and Rae Bareli),” he said
“I won’t let the people of Wayanad feel Rahul’s absence,” Priyanka said.
