Himachal Faces Silent Epidemic: Mental Stress Grips One in Four

Monday, 15 April 2024 | PNS | Shimla

Himachal Pradesh, known for its serene landscapes and tranquil ambiance, is battling a silent epidemic that is silently gripping every segment of society — mental stress. Startling statistics reveal that one in every four individuals in the hill state is grappling with this invisible foe, painting a grim picture of the mental health landscape.

The latest data from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) underscored the pervasive nature of mental health challenges across the region. Particularly vulnerable are the youth and the elderly, who are increasingly turning to psychological counselling services in search of solace.

Experts pointed out that stress manifests differently across age groups, with contemporary pressures worsening the issue. While academic burdens were once the primary concern for youth, the advent of online gaming has added another layer to their mental strain.

The relentless pursuit of early success has ensnared many young individuals in a web of stress, leading to a surge in hospital visits. Conversely, for the elderly, the scourge of loneliness looms large, exacerbated by the tide of urbanization that has uprooted them from their familial support systems.

While Himachal Pradesh fares comparatively better than some states, the prevalence of mental stress is on an alarming upward trajectory. Uttarakhand reported the highest incidence at 38.6 per cent, followed closely by Sikkim at 31.9 per cent.

Despite ongoing efforts by health service centers and educational institutions to raise awareness and provide support, proactive measures are imperative to stem the rising tide of mental health cases. Various factors contribute to stress, including personal traumas, social isolation, and chronic illnesses.

Moreover, experts highlighted the role of social media and substance abuse in exacerbating mental health issues. They stressed the importance of meaningful interpersonal connections, advocating for face-to-face communication over virtual interactions. Consistent follow-up and adherence to treatment plans are also deemed crucial in effectively managing stress.

As Himachal Pradesh grapples with the multifaceted nature of mental health challenges, concerted efforts are needed to address the root causes and bolster support systems. By fostering a culture of open dialogue, empathy, and proactive intervention, the state can work towards alleviating the burden of mental stress and promoting holistic well-being among its populace.
