After the rape incident in Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Ranchi on Thursday night, January 15, authorities at the largest government hospital of the State have decided to take some strong measures for safety and security of patients, attendants, medical and non-medical staff working in the hospital.
The hospital management has decided that about 1100 CCTV cameras will be installed on the hospital premises. These cameras will monitor every second's activities. PRO, RIMS, Rajiv Ranjan, today said, "When the protectors themselves commit such incidents, then who will provide security. Therefore, now more than 1000 CCTV cameras will be installed in RIMS hospital. Along with the doctors and patients, the family members also stay in the hospital. Therefore, security is very important."
He further said that multiple entry points in different blocks of the hospital are also a major concern in the security. “Earlier also a work plan was made and now it has been decided that only one entry and exit point will be made at each block for safety and security reasons,” he added.
A Special Auxiliary Police (SAP) constable was taken into custody in Ranchi for allegedly raping a 20-year-old woman who had come to the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Ranchi, to seek treatment for a relative.
The suspect, identified as SAP constable Santosh Kumar Barla, was apprehended on Friday after prompt action by the police. Reports indicate that the victim, a resident of Chatra district in Jharkhand, was at RIMS on Thursday night when the assault occurred.
While she was out purchasing medicines for her relative, the constable reportedly lured her to a secluded spot on the hospital's fourth floor, where he sexually assaulted her.
After the attack, the suspect allegedly threatened the woman with severe consequences if she revealed the incident.
The victim shared her ordeal with her family on Friday morning, leading to the filing of a formal complaint at the Bariatu police station in Ranchi. Police acted swiftly, arresting the suspect and initiating an investigation.
Ranchi Sadar Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Sanjeev Besra said, "The accused SAP constable has been sent to jail. Immediate steps were taken following the victim's complaint."
