With the arrest of four persons, the Delhi Police on Saturday busted an examination racket operating in the national capital where the accused were arranging proxies to appear in place of actual candidates. According to police, a 28-year-old man hired a proxy candidate equipped with a Bluetooth device to appear for him in a CBSE recruitment examination on Saturday The plan was backfired after Delhi Police arrested four persons, including the proxy and the original candidate, after an invigilator flagged a biometric mismatch between the two.
The alleged impersonation scam took place during the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) recruitment examination in a south Delhi school on April 20, Delhi Police said.
The accused have been identified as Sachin (26), the proxy, Nitin (28), the original candidate, and Baljinder (27) and Shyam Sunder (29), both middlemen, who were arrested from different locations across the city.
The examination being conducted was for the posts of superintendent and junior assistant, to fill over 200 vacancies across the country.
Police said the proxy candidate was caught during the verification process of the exam when the biometric device flagged a mismatch between his and the uploaded biometric data.
Two officials managing biometric then informed the centre in-charge that a candidate, identified as Nitin, has sent another person, Sachin to appear for the exam. The exam centre in charge, then filed a complaint with CR Park Police Station.
When the Police arrived at the spot, they spoke to the complainant and the observer of the CBSE Recruitment Examination — who was the witness in the case. Accused Sachin was surrounded by police personnel in plain clothes and was asked to step outside the examination center so that Nitin can be identified and arrested. As soon as Sachin stepped outside, 2–3 boys approached him and asked about the exam. One of them was then identified as Nitin. Both Sachin and Nitin were then apprehended. Further, Nitin and Sachin disclosed the involvement of their associates, Shyam Sunder and Baljinder, in the conspiracy. During the continued investigation, the co-accused persons, Shyam Sunder and Baljinder, were also arrested from W-Block Park, Greater Kailash.
Baljinder revealed that Sachin Dangi, a resident of Village Madina, District Rohtak, Haryana, had appeared in the said examination on his behalf at a school in Mayur Vihar, Delhi. Baljinder further stated that Shyam Sunder had struck a deal with Nitin for 15 lakhs to ensure his selection in the exam. Shyam Sunder then referred the deal to Baljinder, who in turn made an arrangement with Sachin to appear in the exam for Nitin for 12 lakhs.
Four GSM Bluetooth devices, four mobile phones, two laptops and one car have been seized from the four accused. Sachin used to plug in a very small sized GSM Bluetooth device into his ears before entering the examination centres. This tiny Bluetooth device has an automatic system to connect calls. He used these devices to coordinate question-answers during examinations, says police official. While speaking to media, Additional DCP of South district Achin Garg said, “In their first step, the original candidate fills the examination form; in this case, it is Nitin. Then, there is a need to find a similar looking individual who can deceive the officials during the verification process at the examination centre. And, in order to find that individual, they contact middlemen named Shyam Sunder and Baljinder. They find a similar looking person who gives the exam in place of the original candidate.”
“Sachin, appeared in place of Nitin, is well educated, graduated and appeared in various exams for Government Job earlier as well e.g. at Pune and Andaman. What is more shocking is that, in many exams, he has been selected too. He is wanted in a case registered at PS Sikkar, Rajasthan. Nitin is a B Tech graduate. He was making efforts to get Government Jobs.” The police officer added.
Both Shyam Sunder and Baljinder are serving in Group D, Nagar Nigam in Haryana’s Tohana, according to police.
