Wednesday, 24 April 2024 | PNS | Lucknow

Election campaign in the eight Lok Sabha constituencies going to polls in the second phase on April 26, ended on Wednesday evening.

In the second phase of the ongoing general election on April 26, polling will be held in Amroha, Meerut, Mathura, Baghpat, Aligarh, Ghaziabad, Gautam Buddha Nagar and Bulandshahr.

Uttar Pradesh’s Chief Electoral Officer Navdeep Rinwa said here on Wednesday that the district elections officers had been asked to ensure that all outsiders leave the respective constituency by Wednesday evening.

He said the Election Commission of India had banned mobile phones, smart phones and wireless sets inside the polling booth. However, the presiding officers in the polling stations have been allowed to carry the mobile phone in silent mode, he added.

In the second phase elections, 91 candidates are in the fray in the eight constituencies –81 males and 10 females. The total number of electorates is over 1,68 crore which includes 90,26,051 males, 77,50,356 females and 791 third genders.

There are 12 candidates in the fray in Amroha, eight in Meerut, seven in Baghpat, 14 in Ghaziabad, Gautam 15 in Buddha Nagar, six in Bulandshahr, 14 in Aligarh and 15 in Mathura.

The eight Lok Sabha constituencies have 40 assembly segments.

Among the eight constituencies Amroha, Meerut, Baghpat and Gautam Buddha Nagar are poised for a triangular contest between the ruling National Democratic Alliance, the opposition Indi Alliance, and the Bahujan Samaj Party.

Meanwhile, Mathura and Ghaziabad are gearing up for a showdown between the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Congress. In Aligarh and Bulandshahr, the BJP will go head-to-head against the Samajwadi Party.

In the second phase of the Lok Sabha elections, the prominent candidates include Hema Malini vying for her third win from Mathura. The veteran Bollywood actress is being challenged by Mukesh Dhangar from the Congress.

However, Mathura is not the sole constituency where the BJP is relying on star power. In Meerut, the party has fielded Arun Govil, renowned for portraying Lord Ram in the popular TV serial Ramayans. He is pitted against Yogesh Verma from the SP and Devvrat Tyagi from the Bahujan Samaj Party.

Meanwhile, incumbent MP Kunwar Danish Ali is seeking his second victory from Amroha, a constituency historically without a strong allegiance to any particular party. Having contested the seat on a BSP ticket in 2019, Ali is now contesting as a Congress candidate and is facing a challenge from Kanwar Singh Tanwar of the BJP and Mujahid Hussain of the BSP.
