LS Polls: Private companies to provide wheelchairs for voting

Monday, 22 April 2024 | PNS | Jamshedpur

In a proactive move to ensure inclusive and participatory elections, District Election Officer Ananya Mittal convened a significant meeting at the Collectorate Auditorium in Jamshedpur. The gathering brought together representatives from various private companies under the chairmanship of Mittal, alongside key officials including Deputy Development Commissioner Manish Kumar and Director NEP Ajay Sao.

The focal point of discussion revolved around two crucial aspects: enhancing accessibility for disabled voters and promoting voter registration among employees of private companies. Recognizing the importance of inclusivity in the electoral process, Mittal underscored the necessity of providing wheelchairs at all polling stations to facilitate voting for differently-abled citizens. Leveraging corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives, Mittal urged companies to procure wheelchairs, emphasizing their pivotal role in fostering a more equitable and accessible electoral environment.

Furthermore, Mittal articulated the significance of ensuring comprehensive voter registration, particularly among the workforce of private enterprises. To this end, a concerted campaign was devised to register missing employees' names in the voter list, spanning from April 22 to April 24. This initiative aimed to guarantee that every eligible voter had the opportunity to exercise their democratic right during the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Crucially, Mittal highlighted the legal provision allowing paid leave for employees on the day of voting. In line with this provision, Mittal urged company managements to ascertain whether the names of employees availing such leave were duly registered in the voter list. This proactive measure aimed to alleviate any barriers to voter participation, thereby reinforcing the democratic ethos of the electoral process.

The meeting also served as a platform to galvanize support for voter awareness initiatives. Mittal implored company representatives to actively engage their workforce in voter education and awareness activities, leveraging innovative approaches to disseminate information about the upcoming voting day on May 25th. By harnessing the collective outreach of private companies, Mittal envisaged a broader dissemination of vital electoral information, thereby enhancing voter turnout and engagement.

The meeting witnessed robust participation from an array of private companies, including industry stalwarts such as GAIL, HCL, Tata Power, Tata Cummins, Tata Steel, Tata Motors, Tata Steel- UISl, UCIL, and Nuvoco. The convergence of public officials and corporate stakeholders underscored a shared commitment to fostering civic engagement and electoral inclusivity.

In conclusion, the meeting epitomized a collaborative endeavor between the government and private sector to fortify the foundations of democracy. By championing accessibility, voter registration, and awareness, the stakeholders endeavored to create an electoral landscape characterized by equity, participation, and democratic vibrancy. As the Lok Sabha elections loom on the horizon, the concerted efforts of all stakeholders serve as a testament to the enduring resilience of India's democratic ethos.
