Mob sets truck on fire after youth’s death

Tension prevailed under the Sadar police station area in Keonjhar district after a 22-year old youth died when a Hyva truck hit his motorbike near Raigoda village on Wednesday night.

 

The deceased was identified as Santosh Dehuri of village Binida under Banspal block. He is survived by his parents, wife and a two-month-old son.

The mishap occurred when Santosh was returning to his village around 11 pm. On hearing the news, locals congregated at the spot and set the truck on fire. The agitators also blocked the road demanding compensation for the deceased’s family.

 

When a police team reached the spot, they had a faceoff with the mob. A policeman sustained serious injury and was admitted to the District Headquarters Hospital.

 

The injured police officer was identified as Phul Jenis Jinia, Officer-in- Charge of Sukati outpost.  On Thursday, after postmortem, police handed over the body to the youth’s family.

 

Raigoda  Sarpanch said, “Many innocent people have been taken into custody. It was a spontaneous reaction of the mob after the accident. We appeal the police to release the innocents.”

 

Sadar police station IIC Trinath Sethi said, “We appeal to people to maintain peace. After inquiry, the details will be shared.”
