Due to prompt action taken by the Forest Department, the number of forest fire points in the State has been reduced to 8,000 this summer season from 27,000 reported during the same period of last year.

Speaking to mediapersons here, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) Debidutta Biswal said that the forest fire incidents have been reduced in the State due to awareness among people and rainfall activities.

Forest fire was reported at 27,000 points during the same period last year while it came down to 8,000 this year as the forest officials have responded to around 99.5 % forest fire points, he said.

“We have formed special squads to attend the forest fire incident. Whenever a forest fire is reported, we douse it,” the PCCF said.

According to officials, incidents of forest fire are high in Malkangiri district due to agricultural related activities, collection of Mahula flowers and for poaching of animals as well.

It has also been observed that some miscreants are setting fire to forests for mischief. Stern action is being taken against such violators, warned a forest official.
