'Efforts should be made to promote tribal culture'

Saturday, 22 February 2014 | PNS | BHUBANESWAR

Expressing concern over the diminishing identity of the tribal communities in the society, Padma Vibushan Jnanpeeth wardee Sitakant Mohapatra on Friday said that there is lack of encouragement to preserve and promote the art, culture and literature of tribal communities in the State.

Inaugurating a two-day Tribal literature Festival, organised by the Sikshasandhan here on the International Mother language Day, Dr Mohapatra lamented that though several schemes have been launched by the State Government for welfare of the tribal fraternity, they have not been properly implemented for various reasons.

Giving a slew of suggestions, poet Mohapatra said there is a need for dedicated workers to work in tribal areas and the local people should be encouraged to work for the interest of the tribal communities.

“literature can be developed through art, and every tribal community has its own art form. We should look for various ways to promote their art culture,” he said.

Besides, self-confidence is another major factor which needs to be incorporated among the triabals, except which no Government assistance can be fruitful in an all-round development of tribals, he observed.

“Though literature festivals are being organised every year, there has been no place for tribal culture, song and dance in their agenda. Therefore, we decided to create a new platform through which the tribal people will be encouraged to share their art and creativity,” said Sikshasandhan president Jatin Nayak. Several writers, storytellers, singers, artists and musicians from tribal communities will participate in the festival, informed Nayak.

Among others, Sikshasandhan secretary Anil Pradhan and coordinator Dr Sangram Jena were present. Notably, the tribals constitute 23 per cent of the total population in Odisha. There are 62 tribal groups in the State, of which 13 are considered most vulnerable.
