Kumkum Dhar's Kathak dance holds audience in thrall

The classic music and dance lovers witnessed a splendid performance of a noted Kathak dancer Kumkum Dhar, here on Monday at Antrang Hall, Bharat Bhavan as she marked the conclusion of Badal Raag 2014. The event was organised by Anhad wing, Bharat Bhavan.

Kumkum Dhar is an experienced and one of the well renowned Kathak dancers hailing from the city of Nawabs, lucknow. She along with her troupe gave a mesmerising performance before the Bhopalites. She is a disciple of lachhu Maharaj from lucknow Gharana. The evening started with Devi Prathna ‘Narayani Namo Namah’ which is better known for starting any programme, performed by Kumkum Dhar followed by a pure dance (various elements of Kathak). Sophisticated style in pure classical form, swift turns, mind thrilling footwork, delicacy of movements and impressive expressions was like a mass treat for the Bhopalites.

The performance that left the audience spell-bound was the solo dance of Kumkum Dhar on Jugalbandi with table rhythms. Moreover, the speedy footwork matching with the tabla presented by Kumkum left the audience awestruck.

She gave a performance on ‘Badrva barsan ko aye’ that was totally based on the rainy season and the essence of it.  It is the original composition of Ravi Nagad. The romantic expressions and heart capturing synchronization between the music and the ghungroos made the audience enjoy the evening. She then presented Dadra ‘Chodo Bihari Dekhi Nagri Sajri’. Along with her troupe she then again performed on Badrva barsan ko aye in Raga Surmalhar.

Rhythmic understanding, ability to extemporize with speedy rhythms and preserving pure Kathak classical style are some of her qualities. The audiences were captivated towards her presentation when she gave rhythmical performance. She wrapped up her performance with Kajri that captured the applauses of the classical music and dance lovers present at the Antrang Hall.

She refined the dramatic and rhythmic aspects, delighting audiences with the performance over rhythm and the stylized presentation. The presentation was an enchanting experience for the classical art lovers of the city.
