Sena MP survives knife attack in Maha

Thursday, 17 October 2019 | TN RAGHUNATHA | Mumbai

Shiv Sena MP Omraje Nimbalkar survived a knife attack on him in Naigaon-Paholi village in Kalamb tehsil of Osmanabad district in Maharashtra's Marthwada region on Wednesday.

Nimbalkar suffered an injury on his left when a youngster stabbed while he was about to leave the venue of an election rally that he had addressed. "A huge crowd of supporters had surrounded him while he was about to leave from the rally venue. Suddenly, one youngster - identified as Ajinkya Takle - surged forward towards him from the crowd, shook Nimbakar's hand and stabbed him," a Sena leader close to Nimbalkar said.

Ajinkya, who is said to be the resident of Paholi village, fled the scene immediately after the incident. The police are looking for him.

Talking to media persons after the incident, Nimbalkar said: "Some people have been creating ruckus in my election meetings for the last several meeting. I had a feeling that I was being targeted. I do not know the identity of the youngster who stabbed me. It is rather unfortunate that an attempt has been made on my life. I am alive because of the blessings of the people".

It may be recalled that Omraje's father and Congress leader Pawanraje Nimbalkar and his driver Samad Abdul Wahid Kazi were shot dead in their car at Kalamboli in Navi Mumbai on February 3, 2006.

In that case, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday had arrested then NCP MP Padamsinh Patil and eight others and subsequently filed a charge-sheet case in a Panvel court.

The Panwanraje Nimbalkar murder trial, which began in July 2011, is continuing in a special court in Mumbai. Early in July this year, social activist Anna Hazare had deposed before the special court in Mumbai as a prosecution witness.

Among other things, Hazare told the court: "There were allegations of corruption against him, for which I did an agitation and after that the government formed a commission under retired Supreme Court judge P B Sawant to inquire the matter".

"I learnt about the murder of Nimbalkar through media. I also came to know through a media report that a contract was given to the shooters to kill me, following which I registered a case in this connection at Parner police station (in Ahmednagar district)," Hazare told the court.

Hazare was made a prosecution witness by the CBI following a directive from the Bombay High Court.
