Speaker Surjya Narayan Patra on Wednesday directed Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Minister Ranendra Pratap Swain to conduct raids on gold jewellery showrooms in Bhubaneswar and Brahmapur and ensure that they are not cheating consumers in weight.
The Speaker gave the direction during the Question Hour in the State Assembly when the Minister mentioned about raids conducted on gold jewelleries in all cities, excepting Bhubaneswar and Brahmapur, by the weights and measures department. The Minister was replying to a related question by BJP MLA Ganesh Ram Singh Khuntia and other members.
The Minister informed that raids were conducted on jewellery showrooms, petrol pumps and other business units. As many as 5,466 cases were lodged and a total of Rs 1,07,32,900 crore was collected as fine in 2017-18. In 2017-18, a total of 6,752 cases had been filed and fine of Rs 1,49,58,650 was collected.
