Puri Shankaracharya Swami Nischalananda Saraswati greeted the scientists, engineers and officials of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) for its success in launching the Chandrayaan-2 during a lecture to his students and disciples in the Gobardhan mutt on Thursday.
In the on-going four-month fasting event, named ‘Chaturmasya Brata’ drawing scores of pupils and students from across the country, the Hindu seer called upon the scientists to stress on the Puranas (myths) as best references towards research in space science.
Stating on space orbit, he said that it is well narrated in the Vayu Puranan, Mahabharat and Bhagabata about the distance of moon from earth besides its radius, circumference and thickness.
The seer said that in the Bhisma Prava, the diameter of the moon narrated as 11,000 Yojana, its circumference 33,000 Yojana and thickness of 59 Yojana. Notably, the Yojana is a unit of calibration in Vedic science.
“It is a known fact that the world consists of earth, water, air, and fire. There is a major role of earth and water in the making of the moon which the Vayu Purana explicitly speaks,” said the Shankaracharya in his four-month monsoon camp.
It is worthwhile to note here that the Puri Gobardhan Peetha had a major role in successful launch of Chandrayan-2 from Sriharikota Space station.
Before the launch of the fully indigenous satellite, the scientists of ISRO had short advice of the seer to implement the Vedic numerations into their space project.
