The Delhi Police has nabbed three armed snatchers, who targeted morning walkers and cyclists at Connaught Place, after an exchange of fire with the police near Delhi’s Shankar Market on early hours of Wednesday.
The suspects were identified as Mohammad Salim (22), Mohammad Ismail (24) and Sayud (22). Police said that one of their accomplices managed to flee the spot. Police said that Ismail and Salim have been found involved in eight cases registered across city each while Sayud's history is being verified.
According to Dr Eish Singhal, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), New Delhi district, the police team laid a trap after they received specific inputs that the suspects would again try to target morning walkers near Shankar Market.
"The suspects, who arrived on a bike, were asked to stop by a police team. Instead of stopping, the duo started firing at the police. In self defence, the police team also fired back at them," said the DCP.
"During the exchange of fire, Salim and Ismail suffered bullet injuries in their legs and were taken to Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) hospital for treatment. While Sayud was arrested, another accused managed to flee from the spot," said the DCP.
"It is suspected that the accused were involved in allegedly robbing an expensive bicycle and an iPhone from a 24-year-old man at Connaught Place last week," said a police official. A case under relevant sections of law has been registered and raids are being carried out to nab the absconding suspect.
Police have also recovered two country made pistol along with two live cartridges, cash Rs.95,000 looted from several persons, 10 mobile phones, two gold chains, three vehicles including a car and one high end bicycle from the possession of the accused," said the DCP.
