Arrest of Chidambaram blow to democracy: Pritam

Friday, 23 August 2019 | PNS | Dehradun

Strongly objecting to the manner in which former Finance and Home minister P Chidambaram was arrested, the president of Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC), Pritam Singh said that his arrest is a big blow to democracy and  institutions in the country. Terming the government’s action as vendetta politics, the PCC chief claimed that an undeclared emergency has been foisted upon the country.  He said that the Narendra Modi government is determined to strike mortal blows on all the four pillars of the democracy. Singh said that all dissenting voices are being smothered by the government with the help of agencies. He said that the agencies like Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Income Tax departments are used by the government to silence the voice of opposition. The PCC president resolved that the Congress party and its workers under the leadership of Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi would continue to raise the voice of opposition on the misdeeds of the government despite every adversity. Refusing to draw parallels between yesterday’s arrest of P Chidambaram and arrest of Amit Shah ten years ago, the Congress leader said that there is a big difference between the political journey of Chidambaram and Shah.

He demanded that the union government should also get the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah investigated. Singh claimed that in the government is on back foot in corruption cases. He added that in the Rafale deal the government was exposed but no investigation was done.
