Friday, 18 January 2019 | Staff Reporter | NEW DELHI

Khyala area in West Delhi is on the edge following the brutal murders of Sunita and her husband Veeru by their neighbour Mohammad Azad on Wednesday evening. Azad also critically injured their 18- year-old son Akash who is battling for his life in a hospital. Police arrested the 42 year-old accused on Thursday and also recovered the weapon from his possession.

Veeru (42) and his wife Sunita (35) hailed from Hathras in Western Uttar Pradesh and were living in a rented accommodation at DDA Colony in Khyala C-block for the last two years. Veeru is survived by four children, Khushbhu (20), Akash (18), Aman (14) and Khushi (8). Khusbhu is married while Veeru and his son used to work in a factory on daily wages. Sunita was a housewife.

According to Monika Bhardawaj, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), West district,  a call was received on Police Control Room (PCR) calls at around 7.20 pm following which team rushed to the spot and found blood stained chunni and slippers.

“On enquiry it was revealed that the injured persons have already been shifted to hospital by PCR and CATS Ambulance. During investigation Khusbhu daughter of deceased Veeru informed police that Azad abused and misbehaved with her mother and when they tried to ask him the reason for his misbehaviour, Azad got agitated and started stabbing Sunita, Veeru and Akash. They were stabbed multiple times,” said the DCP.

“Sunita and her husband Veeru succumbed to their injuries, whereas Akash is admitted at Deen Dayal Upadhyay hospital is now in stable condition. Azad had fled the spot soon after committing the crime. He was later traced and arrested from Moti Nagar area. On his instance the chopper used in the crime was also recovered,” said the DCP.

“During interrogation the accused revealed that he was at loggerheads with the victim’s family on some petty issue. On Januray 16 a quarrel had taken place between them and when the victim’s family came to his house, he became agitated and lost his control. He took out a chopper from his house and stabbed Sunita, Veeru and Akash in full public view as his neighbors watched in horror,” said the DCP.

“Veeru was stabbed multiple times. There were two stab wounds on Sunita’s body, one on her abdomen and other on her head. Akash was stabbed in abdomen and had another stab wound on his right hand,” said the senior police official.

“The incident was triggered on January 14 when a bottle of Sunita’s daughter Khushi, fell from the balcony and hit Azad, standing on the road. Later Azad and Veeru indulged in a heated argument but they were separated by some local,” said a senior police official.

Khushbu, the eldest daughter of Veeru alleged that her father was stabbed for atleast 20 minutes by the accused. “I was standing there crying for help. I also had a fear that Azad might stab me also. Luckily youngest brother Aman was not at home otherwise Azad would have stabbed him also. After stabbing my father he did not even run as he walked away with blood soaked knife,” said Khusbhu.

“There was wedding in the colony so no was present there. We came to know a lot later about the incident. We thought voices were coming from ladies sangeet going on in another street,” said Neeraj, a neighbour.
