Panel to implement e-vehicle policy in city

In a bid to promote using of Electric Vehicles (EV) among people of national Capital, the Delhi Government has constituted a high-level committee to set up infrastructure of EV vehicles in the city. The 11 member committee which will work with the Centre will have members from various departments and agencies such as Delhi Dialogue and Development (DDC), transport, power and Municipal Corporations.

The high level committee which was constituted by the Minister of Delhi Power Department Satyendar Jain will work to 'roll out the charging infrastructure in Delhi and will ensure timely coordination among all the Government agencies and bodies concerned in implementing the strategy for setting up charging infrastructure in the city following the Delhi Electric Vehicles Act 2019'.

The main objective behind the initiative is to reduce air pollution in the national Capital by promoting Electric Vehicles among the people as much as possible. The Government is also planning to give 50 per cent subsidy on buying of EV vehicles. The Government is also going to purchase 1,000 electric buses under Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) for Delhi.

Following the policy, the members and the Government will work on to identify areas across the city to set up charging stations at a ratio of every 3-4 kilometres. The Government will also involve private participants to work on the projects. "The aim is to make Delhi pollution free and to encourage people to electric vehicles as much as possible. The Government had earlier also announced that, the target is to  have one out of four vehicles registered annually to be electric by by 2024 and to turn at least 50 per cent of the new Government vehicles registered to be electric in coming five years," said an official.

Further, the Power Minister has recently announced that that the Government will give subsidy to e-rickshaw and e-vehicles owners to curb air pollution — Rs 4.50 per unit will be charged for low-tension consumers instead Rs 5.50 per unit and Rs 4 per unit for high-tension consumers, while it was Rs 5 earlier. The 11 member committee will have senior officials of various departments and agencies as its member. The members are Jasmine Shah, Vice Chairman of DDC, Gajendra Haldia, member, DDC, Chairman of New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), Commissioner cum Secretary of Transport, commissioner of all MCD's, Director of Delhi Transco Limited, CEO's of all discom companies and Managing Director of Energy Efficiency of Services Limited (EESL).
