PPSC gets former Western Army Chief as chairman

Punjab Governor VP Singh Badnore on Tuesday administered the oath of office to the newly-appointed chairman and two members of Punjab Public Service Commission (PPSC) in the presence of Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh.

Lieutenant General Surinder Singh, who retired as the General Officer Commanding-in-chief (GOC-in-C), Western Command of the Indian Army, was sworn in as PPSC chairman, while Additional District and Sessions Judge Mohali Shivinder Singh Mann was administered the oath of office and allegiance to the Constitution as the official member, and eminent author and columnist Harmohan Kaur Sandhu (Bubbu Tir) as the non-official member.

Chief Secretary Karan Avtar Singh conducted the proceedings of the swearing-in-ceremony at the Punjab Raj Bhawan.

A decorated soldier and recipient of Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Lt General Singh relinquished the command of Western Army on his retirement on July 31.

As the GOC-in-C of Western Command, Lt Gen Surinder Singh (retd) was instrumental in formulating futuristic operational concepts in offensive and defensive employment of the Western Army and also paved roadmap for restructuring and modernization.

Mann, the additional district and sessions judge, had also served a special judge in the CBI court of Punjab and Presiding Officer, Industrial Tribunal-cum-Labour Court, Chandigarh.

Author-columnist Bubbu Tir, daughter of late writer Gurnam Singh Tir (popularly known as Chacha Chandigarhia), is a socialite. She is an alumna of Panjab University, Chandigarh.
