Newly-appointed president of Bharatiya Janata Party’s Uttar Pradesh unit, Swatantradev Singh, will be accorded a rousing welcome during his maiden visit to Lucknow as party chief on July 19.

BJP national general Vidyasagar Sonkar said that Singh would reach Lucknow by a regular flight from Delhi at 2 pm and during his one-hour transit from CCS Airport at Amausi to the BJP state headquarters he would be given a rousing welcome. 

“Party workers are excited to welcome their new state president,” Sonkar said in a written statement.

Singh’s appointment as BJP state chief was made by party’s national general secretary Arun Singh after which BJP president Amit Shah asked the new incumbent to take charge immediately.

Singh belongs to backward caste and has made rugged Bundelkhand his political karmabhoomi. He is a member of Legislative Council and had been party’s general secretary for two terms.

Singh replaced Mahendra Nath Pandey, who has been made Union minister after winning Lok Sabha election from Chandauli. 

The new BJP state president, an organisation man, is a native of Mirzapur but has made Orai in Bundelkhand his karmabhoomi. He studied there and started his political career as Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad member from DV Degree College in Orai. 

Singh started his career as Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh worker in 1986. He was organisational secretary of ABVP from 1988 to 1989. He was appointed general secretary of BJP’s Yuva Morcha and in 2001 was made state president of BJYM. He became legislator for the first time in 2004. From 2004 to 2014 he was state general secretary. In 2017 he was made Minister with Independent Charge.
