Equal is Greater than Divide

Aasman pe hai khuda, aur zameen pe hum, aaj kal woh is taraf dekhata hai kam. Violence, casteism and religion have taken centrestage. Dear God, equal is greater than divide

Dear God,

I was taught you are omnipotent, omniscient and omnipresent. Of course, as I grew up, I understood that teachers only teach what is in the syllabus.

There are a lot of things that I was taught that have since changed, for example Pluto is no longer a planet and the Higgs Boson does exist. Keeping the everchanging facts in mind I was thinking what if you were not really watching us on this Third Rock from the Sun, in a remote solar system, on the edge of the galaxy called the Milky way? What if the problems of the multiverse have you so consumed that you have completely forgotten about us?

I have also been taught that there are some men here on this planet that have more access to you than everyday people. We call them, or they call themselves the enlightened ones. I am hoping that this letter will find its way to one of them and the enlightened ones might enlighten you with the problems we have.

To put it succinctly, this place is a mess. I am sorry to have to say this to you, but you are to blame. I mean, what were you thinking? You kept sending us these messiahs on a regular basis who preached in your name. Not that they were bad, they only spoke of love but what happened is, soon their followers became cults that grew voluminously into what we call religions. In time, one religion fought the other claiming to know the right path to you.

When you noticed that the first ever messiah did not really cut it, why did you send more and create this divide that we have to now live with? I can’t begin to tell you of the strife that has been created in your name. Entire countries have been wiped out, people massacred, fortunes made, fortunes lost and inequality fostered.

I was born two decades after my country was torn into two on the basis of a what we call religion. Yet, let me tell you that the idea of Partition was born almost a 100 years back, while you were probably on a heavenly beach enjoying a pinacolada. People often blame the British for the Partition; the truth is that it was way back in 1930 when the idea of Pakistan was born in a session of the Muslim League that it germinated.

They thought that by creating a Hindustan and Pakistan the matter would come to an amicable end. But they did not know that Hindustan and Pakistan do not exist out there in the mud and sand but in the minds of people. The Partition still exists and sadly takes place every living day. Partition is a continuous process but bear with me just a wee bit more before I explain why.

On my side of the land, the attempt was to be secular which means that all roads to you are welcome. In my land a lot of options exist to attain you and all are allowed to co-exist. But merely allowing does not do anything. Co-existing is not easy.

You are supposed to be the be all and end all of Oneness. Sadly, oneness is the last thing I see here.

If you are taking the time out to read this, let me explain something to you. I know that you are God and you don’t need explaining but humor me and my rant. The problem with being divisive is that it is not any great philosophy but merely a habit. When you are in the habit of dividing you don’t stop at religion, you just go on.

Within religion there are various sects, sometimes they are also called castes. Within the castes, there are the rich and the poor, within the rich and poor of the caste, are the families of the caste, within the families are brothers and sisters, husbands and wives, elders and the young, who can’t see eye to eye. There are schools and workplaces teeming with division, the clever and not so clever, the front and the back bencher, the chap who seems like he has a future and the chap who has none.

You won’t believe when I tell you that there is also a division on body types, yes you did not create all men equal, that is just hogwash. Size zero is better than any other size, for your information. So, watch it when you are creating.

The habit of division does not stop till it comes home and divides you from the ones, who you once called your own. It will make you feel depressed. It will challenge your very existence. If there is evil, and you would know best about that, let me assure you that the habit of division is the worst of it.

Is there a way by which you could intercede and stop what is going on, without sending another Messiah please? Can you not just appear in the sky and say, ‘Hey I am God. And for my sake just stop this dividing’.

In my native language there is a word called akashwani, which means your voice booming out of the heavens, which oftentimes giving us a prophecy. Can you not make a worldwide akashwani? Unless, of course, the akashwani does not exist either. Which then is a real bummer!

In the absence of your booming voice, what is the way forward? You are God and you have the answers to all the questions. What do you suggest?

Please do not come up with suggestions like approaching world leaders. They use division for their own gain. They are the most dangerous kinds. Leave out Godmen. A lot of them are in prison for raping, yeah, no kidding!

I can see you frown and scratch your head. You don’t see a way out of this, do you? Is there no way to turn back time and knock the guy out who thought about dividing first?

There is a part of me that sometimes conjures up a conspiracy theory about you. That you have given up on us and are actually encouraging this wrangling so that we just bring an end to ourselves and you can start afresh; a clean slate. If that is indeed the case, then please give us one more chance. I promise you we will take the path you show us.

If we ever needed you it is now. People are dying. This is very urgent. You know where Earth is right? Or should I send you a Google Location?
