Hanoi barber offers trump- kim Jong hairdos for free
At a barbershop tucked away in a Hanoi alley, Le Phuc Hai patiently waits for the dye to turn his black hair the orange shade of US President Donald Trump’s locks. On a chair next to him, nine-year-old To Gia Huy emerges as the spitting image of a miniature Kim Jong Un. “Many people say that I look like Kim Jong Un, especially when I have this hairstyle,” said Huy, who is nicknamed “Un” for his likeness to the North Korean leader. He was unable to hide his excitement that Kim is coming to the Vietnamese Capital next week for his second summit with the American president, and hopes for a chance to see Kim in person. As the summit frenzy grips Hanoi, hairdresser Le Tuan Duong has joined in, offering free Trump or Kim hairstyles to about a dozen customers.
“Hanoi is a city of peace. When Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un decide to come here to talk about restoring peace, I think I should do something to show that Hanoi people welcome the summit,” Duong said. He said Kim’s hairstyle shows youth, while Trump’s displays power. “But Kim’s style is a lot more popular among customers,” he said. Hai, a motorcycle taxi driver, went for Trump’s orange hair. “I really like Donald Trump, so I want to have (his) hairstyle,” he said.
100-pound tortoise missing in New Mexico
A New Mexico woman is on a desperate hunt for her disappearing pet that can’t run fast and can’t be missed — a 100-pound tortoise. KOB-TV reports Dusty the Turtle went missing earlier this month in Roswell, New Mexico after strong winds knocked open a gate that housed him.
Shana Emmert, who was pet sitting Dusty for her niece, says she believes the turtle strolled away from the backyard and into the desert during the wind storm. According to Emmert’s neighbors, the 100-pound (45-kilogram) Dusty was last spotted near Berrendo Creek in Roswell and hasn’t been seen since. The family is offering a $500 reward for the turtle’s safe return.
Wyoming district will open 1-student school next fall
A Wyoming school district plans to re-open an isolated school to serve a single student entering kindergarten this fall. The Laramie Boomerang reports Cozy Hollow School is about 60 miles north of Laramie. A modular classroom is already there but hasn’t been used for about a decade. It will be the second one-student school in the Albany County School District. They’re only a few miles apart, but connecting roads are impassable much of the winter.
Wyoming law requires on-site education for isolated students when it’s impossible to transport them to other schools. The district tried live-streaming classes for isolated students but it didn’t work well, especially for young children. District officials say it will cost about $150,000 combined to educate the two students next school year.
Snowman builders aim for big money in video contest
Building a snowman isn’t always just a way to while away a long winter. For some people in Russia and Ukraine, it’s a way to possibly earn some significant money. The YouTube channel SlivkiShow, popular among Russian-speakers with more than 12 million subscribers, launched some elaborate construction efforts last month by announcing a prize of 100,000 rubles ($1,500) for the tallest snowman built by viewers. A group of young men from Donetsk, in eastern Ukraine where armed conflict between separatists and Ukrainian forces drags on, looked like serious contenders until they were undone by war and weather.
“Our snowman turned out to be about 11 meters (36 feet), but we literally didn’t make it by a couple of hours — it melted,” said constructor Daniil Kovalenko. “And it’s not just the melting ... but because we live in Donetsk — and everybody knows what’s going on in Donetsk — there were strong blows, the ground shook and the whole last part of the snowman we built in the last three days crashed down.”
The contest may be a potentially lucrative lark for some, but for a woman in the Arctic Circle city of Severomorsk, it’s serious business. She wants the prize in order to defray the costs of surgery for her son.
In videos submitted to the contest so far, building techniques have ranged from rolling a big ball of snow to well-organized work by teams applying the snow to solid frames. Contest rules say it has to all be done by hand — no machines allowed. And, the contest specifies that each snowman — no matter how big and intimidating — has to have a jolly, classic carrot nose.
Man says he stole Pepsi truck to get to the airport: police
Authorities say an Oklahoma man stole a Pepsi truck as the driver was unloading soda in the back. Tulsa police say no one was hurt. The driver jumped out of the back when he felt his rig move. A trail of sodas spilled out as the truck drove off.
Police say Steven Hart told them he was trying to get to the airport after an argument with his girlfriend. The girlfriend says he was searching for her. Police say that when they caught up to the truck stopped in traffic, Hart jumped out and started to run off. Hart was arrested as the rig rolled into the back of a school bus. No children were aboard. Hart is being held on pending charges that include larceny and attempted escape from the county jail as he was being booked into custody.
