October 1 is celebrated as International Day of Older Persons all over the world. Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment celebrates this day and confers awards — Vayoshreshtha Samman — to eminent senior citizens in recognition of their service. As per the scheme, the awards shall be presented by the President of India or the Prime Minister at a special ceremony to be held on on October 1.
Thaawarchand Gehlot, Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment, says, “India is the nation which follows the philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, which means that the whole earth is one family. It inspires us to care for elderly as our prime concern.”
Every year, a morning walkathon is also organised on the occasion. It is is a symbol of expression of solidarity with the older generation and also an act that gives a strong message to the whole world that senior citizens are an integral part of our society.
