Siddiqui disqualified from Council for defection

Wednesday, 22 July 2020 | PNS | Lucknow

Even as two Congress MLAs — Dinesh Pratap Singh and Aditi Singh — were given clean chit in disqualification notices by Assembly Speaker, former Bahujan Samaj Party member Naseemuddin Siddiqui was disqualified from Upper House under Anti- defection law on Tuesday. Siddiqui had left the BSP to join Congress in 2018.

After hearing a petition filed by BSP leader Sunil Kumar Chittor, Legislative Council chairman Ramesh Yadav decided against Siddiqui on Tuesday and the decision would be effective from February 22, 2018 - the day Siddiqui left the BSP to join Congress. His term was to end on January 30,2021.

Interestingly, Dinesh Pratap Singh also contested the last Lok Savha polls against Congress chief Sonia Gandhi on a BJP ticket from Rae Bareilly, but continues to be a Congress MLA as a notice for his disqualification moved by Congress was rejected by Assembly Speaker last week.
