Four elephants, including a calf, were found unconscious near a village in Chhattisgarh’s Surajpur district on Monday, with officials suspecting food poisoning.
However, two of the four jumbos were up on their feet after treatment by veterinarians and started moving away, the officials said.
Locals gave information about the elephants near Kachhiya village in Biharpur forest range, around 100 km from Surajpur district headquarters, Surajpur Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) B.S. Bhagat said.
A third elephant tried to get up after it was given an injection. The medical team is keeping an eye on the calf.
The prime facie cause seems to be food poisoning, Bhagat added.
There are 15-16 elephants in the area and the herd damaged some homes in the village on Sunday night, the officer said.
