The Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) on Saturday disqualified 49 candidates, who were provisionally qualified for the 7th to 10th Civil Services Preliminary Test (PT) examination. The step has come after the JPSC scrutinised the case of 57 candidates, whose OMR sheets were missing, but they were marked present during the examination.

The JPSC in a notice dated December 11 stated that it is noteworthy that an unprecedented 5,35,521 candidates had registered for this examination of which eventually 3,69,327 obtained their admit cards. Finally, 2,49,650 examinees appeared, accounting for nearly 5,00,000 OMR sheets. This figure was nearly four times any previous examination.

“In this current P.T. out of 2,49,650 examinees, there were 57 such for whom one OMR answer sheet was not available at JPSC on November 1, 2021. All these 57 candidates had been shown as present on the attendance sheet of the concerned examination centre. This was not the fault of the 57 candidates in question. In the interests of well-established canons of natural justice and in order not to delay the declaration of results, the Commission decided to allow 49 of them the cut-off marks and declare them as qualified provisionally. The remaining 8 could not be declared qualified due to other valid grounds particular to their cases,” the notice stated.

Further the JPSC stated that an enquiry was initiated into the matter on November 1, 2021, itself so that these cases could be resolved at the earliest. After the inquiry, on the basis of facts, none of these 49 candidates have been found to qualify, it said giving roll numbers of the candidates.

Notably, a delegation of agitating JPSC candidates had met Jharkhand Governor Ramesh Bais over the irregularities in JPSC’s PT examination with the evidence of rigging on Friday.

Through its official notification the JPSC has notified that due to the unavailability of the OMR answer sheets on November 1 with the commission they declared 49 of them provisionally qualified so as to prevent the delay in declaration of results. As per information provided by the JPSC, the cut-off marks will not vary after the removal of 49 candidates from the list as they have been awarded marks equivalent to the cut-off marks.

Commenting on the JPSC decision, State BJP president of BJP and Rajya Sabha Member Deepak Prakash said that the party’s stand on the issue has been vindicated. “An FIR should be lodged against the culprits responsible for the bungling,” he added. He had just some days ago raised a question regarding provisional results, saying there is no such provision under the JPSC rules.
