Police lens on tenant verification

Monday, 01 February 2021 | PNS | Ranchi

Jharkhand Police will focus upon much needed yet neglected tenant verification as part of police protocol to identify dubious and criminal elements taking shelter at rented houses with fake identity.

Ranchi police has in fact started taking steps as the district police issued fresh guidelines making it mandatory for tenants to provide the name of a guarantor besides identity proofs.

In case the tenant concerned is unable to introduce a guarantor he will have to submit details of his local employer or any local address.

“We have supplied revised tenant verification forms to all police stations. This form includes details of the guarantor also along with his photograph.  This is in addition to details and documents of tenants and house owners. In case the tenant is unable to produce any guarantor, he will have to submit details of any of his local contact besides the details of  employers,” Ranchi City SP Saurabh informed The Pioneer.

In the new form, house owners  will have to furnish details of his family members. Ranchi police has asked house owners not to rent-out their house without proper verification by the police.

As Ranchi police years back had introduced beat policing to keep tab on localities it has been decided that other  than concerned police stations cops of beat policing will also regularly check who else are living in the locality as tenants.

“Police stations are burdened with law and order and investigation hence officials and cops get little time to keep tab. But this is an important thing as far as crime control is concerned because in most of the cases it was found that criminal elements and even rebels hide in the city capital in rented houses. They flee after committing crime. Police discovered quite late that the tenant was actually a criminal,” said one of the officials of Ranchi police.

Even the previous records indicate that the outskirts of the state capital remained a safe zone for criminals owing to easy accommodations available on rent without paperwork and police verification.

Especially localities like Nagri, Namkum, Dhurwa, Tupudana, Kanke, Ratu, Jagannathpur and Pandra, among others remained under scanner of police where a number of cases were reported where criminals and hired shooters stayed unnoticed and fled away after committing crime.

In 2018, the marketing executive of a car company Rakesh Kumar was shot dead by five shooters in Sukhdeonagar police station area who were staying as tenants at different places.  not even seeking ID proofs from their tenants came to light during recent investigations into the murder of a car sales executive Interestingly, one of the shooters Himanshu Dubey had rented a room in the same house where victim was living. Shooter introduced himself as Subodh Kumar, an engineering aspirant.

In the same year Ranchi police had arrested 10 history-sheeters from Daladali under Nagari police station area along with a number of AK-47 and live magazines. They too were living in a rented house for four months,” the SSP said.
