With the aim to make the national Capital a modern, equitable and sustainable city by 2047, the Dialogue and Development Commission (DDC) on Wednesday launched the ‘community parks’ initiative to transform neighbourhood parks and gardens into modern and world-class spaces.
According to a senior DDC official, the initiative will be a collaboration between the DDC, Delhi Parks and Gardens Society, Residents Welfare Associations (RWAs) and CSR organisations.
“They all will work towards holistic transformation of 1,000 community parks of Delhi in the next five years. The first set of parks will be set up with the support of ICICI Foundation, JK Cement and CII Delhi,” said the official.
On the occasion of the launch, DDC vice-chairperson, Jasmine Shah said that the community parks initiative was an important pillar of the Delhi@2047 initiative which was launched by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in August 2021.
“The DDC, in collaboration with its partners, will enable the resources that are needed to transform basic parks facilities into modern, world- class parks.
These parks shall be designed as multi-use spaces. The local communities would be involved in the design and development of these parks in order to ensure that they cater to the needs of diverse stakeholders,” said Shah.
Reena Gupta, advisor to the Minister of Environment, said that well-designed parks are spaces for culture, recreation, community development, heritage, health, wellness and economic development. “The Delhi Government recognises the importance of green and open spaces for Delhi to become a world-class city. For post-Covid public life, parks far outvalue other public spaces as safe and inclusive havens for the community. Therefore the community parks initiatives is a key pillar of the Delhi@2047 initiative”, said Gupta.
Saurabh Singh, the president, ICICI Foundation for Inclusive Growth said that they were pleased to partner with the Delhi Government in the effort to improve the ecology and water conservation projects of the Capital for the benefit of the citizens of Delhi.
