Ghadai suggests tariff cuts on minerals to boost revenue

Monday, 13 June 2022 | PNS | BHUBANESWAR

There is a need to spend 100 per cent of the Budget allocation to eliminate regional imbalance. This would ensure success of the Government’s plan and the overall development of Odisha," said former Finance Minister Prafulla Chandra Ghadai at a full-fledged Budget preparation meeting.

The meeting was chaired by Finance Minister Niranjan Pujari and attended by top officials.

Similarly, the land banking system should be strengthened for industrial growth in the State. Walls should be constructed through various tehsil offices by allocating funds to the Revenue Department to protect the identified land for industrialisation. In addition, in consultation with the Central Government, the excessive tariffs on minerals should be reduced immediately, he told.

Ghadai warned that Odisha's revenue collection would get reduced significantly if the tariffs were not reduced.

In the last financial year, Odisha received about Rs 7,000 crore from mineral exports. That's 252 per cent more than in the 2000-21 financial year. But now the Central Government has significantly increased its export tariffs on minerals, reducing the export rate of minerals from Odisha, he said.

Ghadai proposed that the Government provide free land for the construction of mini-cinema halls in each block. Make it easier for young entrepreneurs to make ends meet by providing bank loans, he said.

"This will increase the income of the artists and promote the culture of Odisha," he said.

Finance Minister Niranjan Pujari will present the full budget in the Assembly on July 2. Earlier, in March, he had presented an interim budget of Rs 1,600,000 crore for the first six months of the 2022-23 financial year. However, the full budget for the financial year 2022-23 is Rs 2 lakh crore.
